Excerpt from the QuickSpecs
In case that multiple systems access the drive in a SAN, the drive extension for UNIX, NAS, SAN (B6953AA) is required. A Fiber Channel point-to-point connection is not considered a SAN.

Thanks to Christian vanHaut, he requested the official answer from HP.
Hi,
I had informations last week from french DP pre-sales that if there is a Switch between the server and the robotic you need a SAN licencse, even if the drive is not shared to multiples servers.
who is right?
Hi,
This is what I want to know from HP. In the quickspecs you cannot find any hint about the SAN switch… And depending on the presales guy, you will get different answers. Anyway, I personally see no difference when connecting a FC Library directly to a server or with a SAN switch in the middle. The backup and restore becomes not faster with the SAN switch in the middle and there will be no advantage in Data Protector when using the Windows drive license in combination with the SAN switch.
In any case it makes no sence to require us to buy a 5x more expensive license when you will not use it and you don’t want to use it in Data Protector.
Let us see if the quickspecs will be changed or if any other guy will overrule presales, until this time let us assume I’m right.
And at the end… A customer willing to spend 1600 € for a backup software called Data Protector is better than a lost customer paying the same for Backup E*** or Comm*****
Best regards
Daniel
Hi,
data protector does not make any check for the hardware that is connected, as long as it concerns a direct attached scsi drive is the same than a FC attached drive even if it goes through a switch, the difference is really in how you configure it in DP, multipath, or multi drive using lock names, etc.
Hope this helps.
Rgds
Hi Sergio,
thanks for the reply. Ando now someone has to write into the quickspecs: “In this case the Windows drive lincese is suffient” 🙂
Best regards
Daniel
Daniel, if they would do so, most people would not go for the more expensive licenses anymore… So I do 🙂
