Stats 2016

Looking back in 2016 – again a very successfully year for data-protector.org.

The Blog was visited 210,000 times (Page Views with about 97,000 visitors) and 54 new articles were released. In total about 269 articles are available. The most popular day was 22.11.2016 with 922 visitors. Since the stats were introduced, the blog was visited about 904,000 times (Page Views with about 261,000 visitors). The most popular articles viewed covered the whitepaper, migration pathes, information about patches and of course older articles. The most popular pages are BRICK and Downloads. The visitors are located in 199 countries, mainly from Germany, United States, India and Brazil. Individual countries from the European Union follow.

More than 450 people are subscribers of data-protector.org and get informed about new posts. The most people are referred by Google and Bing; it’s not a surprise, data-protector.org is always listed on the first page in top 10 ranking. But also from the HPE Community (Data Protector Support and News Forum), LinkedIn and other social media providers new visitors and Data Protector friends are referred to the blog.

Thanks to all valued readers for supporting the site.

Data Protector helper tool – clicker.exe

Have you ever required to select a large number of individual files maybe for restore and the selection could not be made on the above folder, because too much would then selected? And when selecting individual files still hundreds of files must be selected for the restore? The selection of the individual objects is tedious and may take some time to complete. Here the little tool “clicker” could jump in. You specifies the number of “clicks” required, press “Start” and go into the Data Protector GUI (in the example restore) and select the first object you need to select, the remainder is automatically selected. Thanks to Sven Donath, he had the idea for the tool, and we used it quite often in a project some years ago. BRICK options

I’m often asked, what are the parameter I can use with BRICK ans what is the meaning of these. When executing brick --help you get a list of available parameter and the description for each. However, please find below the explanation.

  • --full, -f –> runs all checks – recommend for maximum 75 server in cell (includes check of the internal database and reports for the last 7 days, …)
  • --reduced, -r –> runs reduced checks – recommended for larger cell (no check of the internal database, reports for the last 2 days, …)
  • --long, -l –> runs additional IDB checks – not recommended for larger cells as runtime of script will increase. Use this mode in smaller environments or when requested.
  • --config, -c –> “config file”, example: -c=c:\temp\brick.conf Runs the checks configured in the config file only. Use ” to quote directories with spaces in Windows.
  • --path, -p –> “output directory”, example: -p=c:\temp or -p=/tmp Use ” to quote directories with spaces in Windows.
  • --support, -s –> collects additional files to support the process to open service requests.
  • --dnscheck –> executes the DNS check, recommend in smaller environments. Parameter will overwrite the settings in config file. (valid for coming version 2.10)
  • --no_dns, -n –> disables the DNS check. Parameter will overwrite the settings in config file. (valid for current version)
  • --rep_start –> defines the start date for the reports to be generated. variable to be used with –config option only. The format must be YYYYMMDD, i.e. “20150420”. The start time is set to 0:00.
  • --rep_end –> defines the end date for the reports to be generated. Variable to be used with –config option only. The format must be YYYYMMDD, i.e. “20150515”. The end time is set to 23:59.
  • --update, -u –> checks for newer version of BRICK. For this option a working internet connection is required.
  • --debug, -d –> debug mode, output is written to brickdebug.log.
  • --exitcodes, -e –> prints out the exit codes used in program.
  • --version, -v –> displays the script version.
  • --help, -h –> prints this help.
