We have learned how to use StoreOnce in our environments, we read Best Practice Guides, Whitepaper, Tips, etc. We know that we have to follow some rules when StoreOnce is in place. As a review you may read Mr_T’s (HP) blog; maybe it will put a smile into your face too. DP 8.0 and VE integration – requested operation timed out
With Data Protector 8.0 and when a backup for virtual machines, using the “Virtual Environment Integration”, is performed, a message might be displayed “Requested operation timed out”. The message has been seen, when long-running snapshots are created by the Virtual Center server. The timeout occurs after 60 seconds. The root cause is a changed behaviour in DP 8.0 compared to Data Protector 7.0. In the file omnirc the variable VI_API_TIMEOUT
can be inserted to increase the value for the timeout. The standard value in Data Protector 7.0 is 300 seconds, for Data Protector 8.0 the standard was decreased to 60 seconds. By inserting the variable with a value of 300 the timeout will be increased, hence the snapshot is done as expected and the backup will run as expected.

Backup performance
If it matters, you had better trust on HP Data Protector to get fast backups and to achieve your backup windows. During the implementation of a StoreOnce appliance with a partner of HP, the following performance values were achieved (see pictures below). The environment: a backup of 5 virtual machines and 15 mount points from different virtual and physical server, 20 Data Protector streams in total. The destination was a HP StoreOnce appliance 4420, 2 Catalyst stores used. The 20 GbE network was utilized for 55%, a further increase in backup performance, of course, possible. Unfortunately, no additional server can be used during the migration and therefore no additional source data were available. The HP Data Protector feature source side deduplication will be used once the migration has been finished. I will expect a further increase of backup performance after migration.
